Strong Women Stay Young Strong Women Stay Young

Miriam E. Nelson's research created news worldwide when the results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After a year of strength training twice a week, women's bodies were 15 to 20 years more youthful. Without drugs, they regained bone, helping to prevent osteoporosis. They became stronger—in most cases even stronger than when they were young. Their balance and flexibility improved. They were leaner and trimmer, without changing what they ate. What's more, the women were so energized, they became 27 percent more active. No other program—whether diet, medication, or aerobic exercise—has ever achieved comparable results.

The Burst Workout The Burst Workout

Here from Sean Foy―exercise physiologist and coauthor of the million-copy bestseller The Daniel Plan―is The Burst! Workout, a complete program for 10-minute interval and circuit workouts that can be done practically anywhere, anytime.

Study after study proves the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training. Now, here’s exactly how to do it: four minutes to raise the heart rate and metabolism; three minutes of resistance training to strengthen muscles and bones; two minutes of core movements for the abs and back; one minute of deep breathing and stretching (a vital component missing from other popular highintensity circuit programs). The book features three four-week programs: Level 1, with no equipment required, perfect for the office (and fighting the “sitting disease”); Level 2, with minimal equipment; and Level 3, which brings interval training to the gym. The simple, scientifically devised exercises are illustrated with step-by-step photographs and are easy to master.

Healthy Mind Cookbook The Buck Institute – Diet and Dementia

I had the great pleasure of touring the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in January and have just been back to attend a panel discussion on the link between diet and dementia. The discussion was between two scientists from the Buck Institute, Dale Bredesen, MD and Brian Kennedy, PhD as well as Rebecca Katz, MS, director of The Healing Kitchens Institute at Commonweal and author of the new cookbook The Healthy Mind: Big Flavor Recipes to Enhance Brain Function, Mood, Memory and Mental Clarity.

The defining message from the talk was what you eat matters in regards to your brain’s cognitive functioning. The scientists at the Buck Institute in conjunction with UCLA studied how food affects the brain and they have found that there are 85 foods that effect how we feel and think. Dr. Bredesen stated that when the early signs of dementia appear, we have a decade in which to reverse the disease.

Grain Brain A #1 New York Times bestseller--the devastating truth about the effects of wheat, sugar, and carbs on the brain, with a 4-week plan to achieve optimum health.

Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that's been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our "smart genes" through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies without drugs. With a revolutionary 4-week plan, GRAIN BRAIN teaches us how we can reprogram our genetic destiny for the better.

Buddhas Brain I recommend Rick Hanson's comprehensive book: Buddha's Brain combines the latest in modern science with ancient teachings to show you how to have greater emotional balance, as well as lead a healthier life.

The authors have simplified the latest neuro-scientific research and presented it in a wise and compassionate style that comforts and educates at the same time.As an added benefit, the author's wife writes an appendix on nutritional neurochemistry recommending nutrients, supplements and dietary basics to support brain function. "I've repeatedly seen that small, thoughtful, sensible changes in what you put in your mouth each day can gradually produce physiologically and psychologically significant benefits," writes Hanson.

January 2013 Featured Book

Since I get asked about weight loss and dieting by many of my patients, I decided to recommend a recent book by JJ Virgin, nutrition and fitness expert. She explains why eating even so-called healthy foods – low-fat milk, whole grain bread, and tofu – may hurt rather than help you lose weight. In other words, your reaction to your favorite diet foods may trigger inflammation and cause a host of symptoms like bloating, headaches, achy joints and even stubborn weight gain.

Inflammation is often caused by foods that are toxic to you and make your body resistant to key chemical messengers that help you burn fat, tolerate stress, and normalize appetite.
