Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to my appointment?

You should wear comfortable clothing that you can lay down in. Generally if I can roll your pants up to your knees and your shirt sleeves up to your elbows I can get to the most commonly used acupuncture points.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture needles are like fine flexible wires and when they are inserted into the body there is a brief pin prick followed by a variety of feelings ranging from a mild tingling or achiness or warm sensation. Sometimes you will feel radiating sensations from the point or even energy moving through the body. Everyone feels the acupuncture sensations differently and I make it a priority that each patient is comfortable with the experience.

How many needles will you use and where will they go?

I use sterile, disposable stainless steel needles that are most commonly placed on the lower arms and legs. Depending on the condition, needles may go in the upper arms and legs, the torso or back. Depending on each persons condition I will use as few as 4 needles per treatment.

What should I expect after my treatment?

Each person will have a different experience of acupuncture. I always recommend that patients try a series of treatments depending on their condition as there is a cumulative effect to acupuncture. After the treatment I will want to know how you feel. Often people feel relaxed or sleepy. Some people feel pleasantly energized. Acupuncture is inherently stress reducing and has a distinctly calming effect on the central nervous system as well as a strengthening effect on the immune system. I will want you to notice how you feel over the next few hours and after 24 hours so that you will experience what is changing in your body. Often the changes are subtle but they may be profound and you can be sure that the cumulative effect will be substantial.

Sometimes symptoms may increase shortly after a treatment and the improvement is delayed until the next day. This is unusual and can be discouraging but when you notice that your body is changing you are on the right t rack. Some chronic conditions will take more than 2-4 treatments to show improvement. The longer someone has been suffering from a condition the longer it will take for that condition to improve. Consistent regularly scheduled treatment is needed to effect a permanent change. An example would be a woman in her 40’s who has always suffered menstrual cramps may find that the first menses after starting treatment may be more painful but with weekly treatments the following menses are much more comfortable so much so that eventually little or no treatment is needed to maintain pain free menses.

What about herbs and nutrition?

Herbal combinations and or nutritional supplements may be prescribed during your appointment. Herbs and acupuncture work synergistically to make a stronger treatment. Diet, exercise and proper rest are essential pillars of health and I will emphasize these as healthy habits.
